Timber is a type of wood which has been processed into beams and planks. Basically, it is a wood or firewood of growing trees.
Any wood capable of yielding a minimum dimensional size can be termed as a timber. It is a stage in the process of wood production. These are used for the structural purpose.
These woods which are adopted for building purposes are timers. Finish timber is supplied in standard sizes for the industry. Timber is used for building houses and making furniture.
Types of Timbers
Pine Wood – Pine is a very stiff wood. This makes it durable and strong when used in furniture. It’s not quite as strong oak, but it does still offer durability.
While furniture made from pine is still moderately heavy and stud, it is higher than oak. These woods are majorly imported from Canada, England, New-Zealand, Australia and some northern countries.
Teak Wood – Teak wood is commonly know as Sagwan in India. Teak is a tropical hardwood tree species. It is water resistant, durable and resistant to diseases or rot. Therefore, it is extremely popular for building things like outdoors furniture and boats. Which would be exposed to the elements.
Because of these great qualities, teak wood is also very expensive. By looking closely at colour, grain, scent, and weight. You can make sure the teak you are getting is real and authentic.
It is used for making, mandir, doors, furnitures, windows etc. It comes in 3 variants i.e. B.T.C. 1 st , B.T.C. Super and B.T.C. 2nd . It is mainly from Burma.
Selwood – Selwood is one of the hardwood timbers. It comes with tough of course grain. It is very light in appearance and turns into dark brown colour with prolonged exposure sunlight. It is known to be prized wood for furniture making and another usage.
Its durability and beauty make it the most demanded timber species for commercial production. The wood is resinous and durable and is sought after for construction. However, it is not suited so well in polishing. It is the cheapest timber. It is used for partitions mainly.
Sleeper wood – It is also known as wooden sleeper. It is one kind of railway sleeper that is made of wood, also known as wooden railway sleeper as wood railroad tie.
The wood for making wooden sleeper usually requires strength and good plastic properly. Due to wooden sleepers are easy to be which will affect the service life. It has good elasticity, simple processing, transportation and laying, easy to connect with rails, and has good insulation.
Rubber Wood – It is a light cultured medium density tropical hardwood obtained from trees grown in rubber plantations. It is commonly advertised as an “environmentally friendly “ wood as it makes use of plantation trees that have already served a useful function.
It is essentially the wood that comes from the rubber tree and it is considered as the good quality furniture. Furniture made with hardwood that is of the tends rubber wood to be long lasting and durable.
Tanzania Wood – This wood is extensively demanded in the industry to manufacture furniture for industries, offices and homes. Due to its features like durability, polished look light weight, sturdiness, high strength and termite resistance this wood is highly treasured everywhere. It is a great replacement to teak wood due to the low price of it.
Ghana wood – It contains natural oils which smells like leather most people prefer to use it for their furniture because of its rich dark brown or lighter shades of golden brown or yellowish white tint. Sometimes it is tinted with wood colour to give it a darker colour.
It can resist damaging effects of fungi and moisture. It is ideal for heavy duty constructions. Its quality has been verified on the basis of its crushing strength and bending properties. It is acid proof and even weather protected. It is mostly low in cost.
Red Meranti Wood – Meranti is a soft to firm hardwood timber. It comes in two forms. Ligh red meranti and dark red meranti, with its deep brownish red tone, highly interlocked grain and high degree of resistance to warping or twisting. It is perfect for molding structure and are used for making furniture, cabinets, window frames, panels etc.
Birch wood – Birch wood is light wood with a very fine grain. It is often used to make cabinates, furniture hardwood floors. It is also frequently used as a veneer due to its beautiful grain and colour.
There are two types of birch wood that are mostly available are yellow birch and white birch. It is one of the least expensive woods on the market. It is extremely strong and durable. It can be a substitute for maple because of similar grain pattern. It is commonly used for plywood because of its strength and inexpensive cost.
Live Edge Wood – It is also as natural edge wood. It is a style of furniture where the furniture where the furniture designer or craftsperson incorporates the natural edge of the wood into the design of the piece.
There are special challenges involved in working with this type of wood and several methods for live edge have developed.
Imported Wood – These species is a scientific delineation based on characteristic inherent in the tree. This woods species are most frequently used for cabinates, indoor and outdoor purposes.
Types of imported wood –
Steamed Beach wood – Steamed Beach wood is a species of beach hardwood found in central Europe. IT has a brown to reddish brown appearance with a typically straight grain and a fine even texture. Beach wood is used to make flooring, furniture, veneer plywood. It is especially favored as fuel wood because of its high density and good burning qualities.
White oak – White oak tends to be a light beige through brown, while red oak has pinkish and reddish instead. Oak is highly durable, easy to work with, looks great or with a clear, natural finish. It is used for furniture, cabinates flooring, wine caskets, boats, barrels, kitchen etc.
Maple Wood – It is commonly used in high end furniture, flooring, cabinetry, and kitchen accessories. Because of its durability and strength. It can be found used as flooring in bowling alleys and for bowling pins. It also tends to get chosen when durability is a concern because it can take a beating.
Asian walnut wood – It is a type of wood often used for flooring. This wood is commonly marketed and sold under this name is not walnut at all but known as Acacia. The hardness of acacia hardwood with its stunning grain pattern makes this an excellent choice for any room in almost any home.
